Am I the only one that is pissed off at this Celtic-Lakers final? I know, I know. “It’s good for the game.” But what does that mean? Is it the endless hype over ’such a historic match-up’? Or that the astronomical ticket prices in LA will help the bottom line?
Maybe, just maybe, I hate the nostalgia attached with this match-up. Red Sox-Yankees? I can understand. Long time division rivals. 100 years of feuding easily equates to endless promotion. Ohio State-Michigan, I can understand. College rivalries run so deep that recruits choose schools solely based on how much they hate the rival school. However, Celtics-Lakers in this day and age means NOTHING.
I should preface this with the fact that I love parody in sports. I was relieved that I escaped being forced to watch those flopping Euro-league sissy boys on the Spurs again. (the Spurs are the most overrated “dynasty” in NBA history but that’s a different story) So, its safe to say that I’m happy to be watching teams that didn’t compete for the title in the past three seasons. But secondly, I don’t know who’s fans are more annoying, the obnoxious Laker fans or the newly rejuvenated Celtics fans (aka the bandwagoners).
Am I going to watch? Probably. I like Garnett & Allen and I’d like to see them get a ring. I hate Kobe’s smug personality and it would be worth watching if someone Chris Childs or Raja Bell’s him. But, I might not make it to the opening tip if I have to endure more of sports talk tv or radio endless hyping of the series rivalry when none of these players has any resentment for the other team.
My prediction: It’ll be just my friggin’ luck that the series goes to Game 7. At which point, I’d hope that KG gets that win. That said, Boston in 7.
